Sexual dimorphism in corallite size and modularity of a broadcast spawning coral, Porites lobata

چکیده
Differences in selective pressures and the energetic cost of gametes gonochoristic corals should vary with sex colony, which may lead to sexual dimorphism. Coral colonies are composed subunits (corallites) that create a complex morphological architecture. If corallite features distinct between sexes, then degree coordinated change among these also (phenotypic modularity). This study tested for dimorphism corallites reef-building coral Porites lobata , gonochoric broadcast spawner, compared this previously demonstrated its congener P. panamensis brooder. Corallite area was 17% larger males than females (p < 0.05). Phenotypic modularity analysis showed integration skeletal traits differs sexes both . In higher trait males, while opposite pattern observed Our results demonstrate differentiate suggest between-sex differences reproductive mode.

Bacterial Acquisition in Juveniles of Several Broadcast Spawning Coral Species
Coral animals harbor diverse microorganisms in their tissues, including archaea, bacteria, viruses, and zooxanthellae. The extent to which coral-bacterial associations are specific and the mechanisms for their maintenance across generations in the environment are unknown. The high diversity of bacteria in adult coral colonies has made it challenging to identify species-specific patterns. Locali...
متن کاملSexual size dimorphism in anurans.
Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the direction and extent of sexual size dimorphism in anurans (in which males are usually smaller than females) as a result of sexual selection. Here, we present an analysis to test the hypothesis that sexual dimorphism in anurans is largely a function of differences between the sexes in life-history strategies. Morphological and demographic data...
متن کاملNo gene flow across the Eastern Pacific Barrier in the reef-building coral Porites lobata.
The expanse of deep water between the central Pacific islands and the continental shelf of the Eastern Tropical Pacific is regarded as the world's most potent marine biogeographic barrier. During recurrent climatic fluctuations (ENSO, El Niño Southern Oscillation), however, changes in water temperature and the speed and direction of currents become favourable for trans-oceanic dispersal of larv...

متن کاملGene Flow and Genetic Diversity of a Broadcast-Spawning Coral in Northern Peripheral Populations
Recently, reef-building coral populations have been decreasing worldwide due to various disturbances. Population genetic studies are helpful for estimating the genetic connectivity among populations of marine sessile organisms with metapopulation structures such as corals. Moreover, the relationship between latitude and genetic diversity is informative when evaluating the fragility of populatio...
